The Heart that Forgot How to Love

When is the last time you tasted true love? Would you feel its touch if it alighted on your forehead this instant? Would you know and trust this love if it jumped from your cupboard as you opened it? The heart that forgot how to love is unable to distinguish the mystery and the many faces of love. The heart that forgot how to love also forgot its sole duty: to feel worthy of attaining true love.

The heart that I am thinking of is ruby red. It beats softly, and in between beats, rests momentarily, attempting to replenish itself in preparation for the next beat. This endless story is absent of anguish, joy and fulfillment. It describes a wholly different narrative, the art of the unliving. The heart that forgot how to love can no longer recall the sacredness of living. Instead, it ensures a predictable and enduring beat.

The heart that knows how to love observes this and wonders, "What keeps Ruby beating? I only beat myself because I long for more love." Other loving hearts gossip amongst each other as well, "Ruby's problem is that he has no problems." The heart that forgot how to love is unbothered by the chitchat. Ruby simply adds another chapter to his never-ending book; another moment, another beat. Relished safety.

The ancients note that it is okay to forget how to love from time-to-time. But it's unwise to pretend, for even the smallest amount of time, that you cannot attain love, or worse, that you are unworthy of love. What happened to Ruby, the heart who forgot how to love, happens to many of us. This is why the Universe presents us a glowing jewel at opportune and inopportune times. To reteach, to remind and to renew the heart that forgot how to love.
