Do you know the life you want?
When you were little did you think you knew what you wanted to do? I’ve sat and listened to so many clients stories as they remember saying to their parents, “I am going to be around horses my whole life; I’m going to be a fireman when I grow up; or I’m going to teach little children; or I’m going to travel around the world and write about every place I go and what I see; or I want to be a doctor and help sick people feel better; or I want to be a mommy.”
I could go on and on with other examples here, but the really interesting thing is that these same people would act all of these things out in their play when they were little. The to-be doctor would always round up patients to work on with a makeshift operating table. The teacher would set up classrooms everywhere and enlist siblings and friends to act as the students. The would-be actors would create a stage, dress-up and perform for anyone that would watch them! The potential war hero would engage in a full military battle by dressing in camouflage and commanding his troops of friends to “hold the hill.” The “mommy” to-be was busy wheeling around her doll baby and making tea parties.
So what is this? Do you really know what you want to do with your life at a young age? Is there a subconscious message that you have intuited as to what your life design will look like? What happens when you grow up and do something drastically different than your life design?
Well for many clients I work with they realize after being in a particular job or career for 10 or 20 years that they just don’t feel fulfilled or happy with what they’re doing. Some have actually spent time examining their past and regained touch with what really interested them when they were younger.
Enjoy these snippets from some actual cases where my clients have found their passion!
One client left her sales job of 20 years and decided to pursue her passion of singing and performing. She went to Knoxville, Tennessee and took voice lessons, connected with the right folks and now has two CD’s. She is supporting herself traveling and performing throughout the country. She is so very happy.
(She was the actress always performing when she was younger.)
Another client left her advertising job of 17 years and has become a graphic designer on the web. She’s in her own business while also doing photography on the side. She is making a great living and so much happier!
(She was a doodler every minute of the day when she could when she was younger!)
I had a client who was an accountant leave her job to get certified to teach accounting instead. She is at a community college and happier than she’s ever been!!
(Yes you guessed it, she was the teacher!)
Another woman kept her counseling job and pursued writing on the side. When she was younger she would shuffle her mother’s typewriter in her room to type story after story of people’s lives she created. Then she would gather the family and read each story with great flair! She has now written two books and is the happiest when she is writing aside from when she is hosting her radio show of the last two years!
(That woman is actually me in case you don’t know it!)
Sit down and do some remembering! What excited you when you were younger? What could you spend hours doing?
The answers can be as simple as looking back to what you were naturally inclined to do in the first place!
